Mathematics Mastery at BVS
At BVS, our vision is for every child to enjoy and succeed in mathematics, regardless of the barriers they may face. We believe that our ‘abilities’, including mathematical abilities, are never fixed or innate, but can be developed through practice, support, dedication and hard work.
As a school, we teach maths through the Mathematics Mastery programme. The mastery approach enables all children to access the same curriculum content and, rather than children being extended with new learning, they are given opportunities to deepen their conceptual understanding by tackling challenging and varied problems.
Having joined the programme in 2018, Mathematics Mastery is embedded across the whole school and the mastery approach is used towards all mathematical teaching. All year groups follow the key mastery principles, including accessing the same task (where possible) for all children, small step learning within lessons, maths meetings and same-day intervention. Our feeder school, John of Gaunt Infant and Nursery, are also following Mathematics Mastery which provides continuity between KS1 and KS2.
